J138 – Reality Check

So, this week, I tried doing the comic differently. Usually, when I do these full-page ones, as opposed to the multi-panel-in-column comics, I draw the whole thing on an 8.5×11 piece of paper, then scan them in and draw in all the lines, speech bubbles, etc. This time, though, I decided to try drawing everything separately, then scanning them in and assembling the whole comic on the computer. I think this turned out pretty well, as I had more control over the whole comic’s layout. But then I went and chose this really boring regular rectangles layout. Hmm. Perhaps I should have been tipped off by the first three letters of the word “assemble”?

It seems like I keep alternating between two computers for doing updates. I really should sit down one day and consolidate all the files on to just one machine. Speaking of which, the file on one of the machines where the site’s code is stored is still labeled “Nonsence Wars” …

Well, that’s all for today. Until next week, carry! (on, off, through, forward, away, etc.)

J137 – Surrealist Switchoff

[3/19/2007] Hey hey! It’s been a while since the last weird thing, so I thought I’d post another one. This one was created by Professor Richard von Christ III of the World University of Hamburg and Dôktër Daniël Sïlbërmann of the West Hamburg Institute of Technology, with some help from D-san. As the entire thing is somewhat confusing, and so I have once again a guide to the comic:

But really, it was drawn all over the place!

And now, random other junk!

“Realistic” D-san D-san, drawn closer to the way he appears in real life, with a somewhat typical expression.

“Realistic” Josh One of my friends, also in the “realistic” style.

Art History “Social Criticism” No explanation.

Mecha Tankette A little two-legged “skater” tank mecha drawn on a whim.

Alright. ’tis all for today! Until next week, inspire!

And if anyone happens to find a shoehorn with teeth, please contact me. I know a guy who wants one.

J136 – Pi Day 2007

[3/12/2007] Hey people, π Day 2007 is soon upon us! You may remember last year’s Pi Day update. This year, we’ve got a math-based pun…

Warning! Math-based SPOILERS! If you are familiar with Sigma notation, I advise you to try the series out yourself first, because you’ll feel a lot better if you figure it out yourself.

Anyhow, for those of you who are not math-savvy, that big Σ in panel one means, “evaluate the expression to the right, for all integer values of n starting at the number below the Σ and ending at the number above the Σ (inclusive), and add them all together. The whole thing is called a series. In this case, the series ( 1 – 4/3 + 4/5 – 4/7 + 4/9 – 4/11 + … ) sums to exactly π, although it takes an excruciatingly long time to reach anything close to π. So when the guy in the first panel (Pete D. Format; another silly math reference) shouts the series out loud, π-tan gets summoned.

Get it?

SPOILERS end here.

Er, anyway, that’s the story behind today’s comic’s pun. I colored the comic with watercolor colored pencils, intending to use the watercolor effect, but remembering last time’s fiasco with the watercolor I decided against it.

Too bad my school canceled the Pi Day art contest this year. I could have won something again…

I think Ben still owes me a soda from last year.
