J143 – Haircuts

[4/30/2007]

Today’s update was inspired by recent events. It was drawn in something like 45 minutes, hence its rough-edges look. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing; I think working quickly can be good for my art. Derek and Sam both found these comics funny; In fact, Sam suggested the last panel, which was originally left blank. So, on that idea of sponteneity, I decided to “paint”:

Penciled quickly, then pen and watercolor pencils. Unfortunately, traditional media don’t scan in too well. Ah, whatever.

Anyhow, Sam got me listening to Star Trekkin’. Although I’ve never watched Star Trek, the song’s still fairly amusing. Although I’m not too fond of the ending…

But anyhow, until next week (when Sandstorm may continue), xyzzy!

dupdate 070425

[070425]

Errr… I just drew something for the first time in weeks yesterday and I was gonna use it as an update, but it was for art and therefore it has been turned in and is not in possession and subsequently cannot be used for an update. Oh darn.

Not to mention I just shaved two years of hair off the top of my head. that’s quite interesting.

I do have a hellalotta sketches from a rather prolific drawing period from a coupla weeks ago, but there’s nothing terrible interesting; I’m just practicing a buncha stuff, so we aren’t getting a drawing this week.

So here’s two Lego MoCs; one for last week, one for this week.

Last week’s got my now dismantled internal-combustion-punk barge, posthumously named the Minase. Frankly, I’m been religiously keeping to my two naming schemes for the past couple years, but I think I’m about to ditch it.

The Minase‘s descedant, the Sawatori is currently intact, will show pictures at some other point, but now, the ship you’ve been waiting for. It’s been under construction since mid-march, incomplete and partially dismantled, the Sakurazaki.

At this point, I want to note my naming scheme. Spacecraft names have alternated between characters from Akamatsu’s Love Hina and Negima, going by whom I thought were the “main” characters. Subsequently, we’ve had Urashima, Springfield, Narusegawa, Kagurazaka, Aoyama and now Sakurazaki. Atmospheric ships, though I don’t care so much about the name, have gone by Kanon characters, also in order of importance: Aizawa, Tsukimiya, Minase and Sawatori. Thus the ship I’m working on now SHOULD be the Misaka, but at this point, like I said, I think I’ll deviate…

But anyways, the Sakurazaki holds the distinction of being my only recent SHIP project to not reach a state of completion before being dismantled. I say recent because variants of the Charmer (She’s the blocky yellow ship on the left) have had this distinction… but does that really count?

Well, construction on the ship began in March (when my last prolific drawing streak ran down XD) based on the “success” of the Minase… meaning I was really pleased with how the latter ship turned out. I was trying to apply a similar contouring style to a larger ship which apparently didn’t work out so well. The Sakurazaki was also my first fully double-decked SHIP – built to MASS to boot. More than 100 studs long, she also weighed quite a bit – and took up a monstrous amount of parts. Interestingly enough, I believe (just from guessitmation) that the Kagurazaka still weighs more.

Ok. I’ll finish next time. I don’t feel like writing more.

J142 – Alternate Universe Rodeo: Sandstorm

[4/23/2007]

I keep switching between two computers for the updates. This has got to stop…

Anyway, I was at Caltech over the weekend. So I almost didn’t have an update for this week. But today I pulled together and … well, that explains the sketchyness. Once again, I only have a vague idea of where I’m going with this. It’s sort of a parody of those weird M*gaT*kyo interlude thingies. But not. As you can tell, I really only have a vague idea of where I’m going with this.

So, if you’re confused: that thingy that AU D-san is standing on is a hover-barge. It’s a type of steam-powered vehicle that colonists build on some back-water colonial worlds in the sci-fi universe D-san and I share. Propellor-driven, and powered by either steam (cheap, and runs on almost anything) or internal combustion engines (imported), they are the tractor-trailers of colonial planets. They tend to be cobbled together out of whatever the colonists have handy (The one in the comic seems to include part of a steam locomotive).

We’ll see how this pans out. Until next week,

Meet James Ensor

Appreciate the man

J141 – No Way Out

This would have made a good “Real Life Random Acts of Stupidity”, except it didn’t happen.

[4/16/2007]

I was at MIT all weekend, so I had no time to draw a comic. So I gave myself 15 minutes to draw a comic. This was the result …

Anyway, I had a pretty good time at MIT. Ate some liquid nitrogen ice cream, played Munchkin, wandered around getting free food…

Anyhow, if any of you fans are in the Caltech area this weekend, I will be at Caltech for Prefrosh Weekend. Look for a guy with long hair. If there are more than one (likely, but probably not too many of them) jsut ask if they are J-san. If anyone actually goes through the trouble to do this, please email me the number of quizzical looks you got. I’ll work that into a comic or something like that.

Anyhow, until next week, when it is Time For Us To Bug Out.

And in Soviet Russia, time for out to bug YOU!

Yeah yeah, sorry about the whole two week thing, I’ve just got stuff going on on the side. Haven’t been doing much drawing at all lately.

That being said, another piece of art and I’ll try to add the Lego some other time.
