Experiments in Coloring: Markers and a Colored Work

Man, I really haven’t been posting at all.  My last post was over 3 months ago.

*shame*

I didn’t draw as much last term, but that’s not to say I didn’t draw at all. Presenting: J’s coloring experiments! (In rough chronological order).

So for Christmas I received these markers. I thought it’d be interesting to do the sort of Copic-marker-blendy-coloring that a lot of other people do.

Unfortunately they didn’t blend.

SPAAAAAAACE WEEEEEEEEEEK!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am proud to present to you the VERY FIRST Nonsense Wars Theme Week! As the banner above may have alerted you, it is now SPACE WEEK!

For our first theme week, we decided to go with something fairly straightforward: Space. To kick us off, I decided to make a new (temporary (?)) banner in the style of silly 1950s sci-fi; ridiculous skintight uniforms, ray guns with pointless circular shielding lens-bits, etc. It’s supposed to look a bit dorky, and I think I managed to convey what I wanted to. Probably needs a few more pointless bits on the guns and uniforms.

As you may have gathered, Derek draws a lot of space stuff. The two of us have a shared universe we came up with, but he’s the one who’s done most of the illustrating of stuff that’s in there. It’s probably been a couple years since I drew a starship, but even before that I didn’t draw that much in the way of big space stuff the way Derek does. I have some old sketches for some stuff I was planning with Sam I might be able to dig up.

Anyway, please enjoy the theme week while it lasts. We’ll probably be doing themed weeks every now and then, interspersed among normal weeks.

J269 – J in the Winter (color sketch)

[2/1/2010] An on-time update! Amazing! Or is it one day early, going by the “J always updates on Tuesday anyway” rule?

Anyway, this drawing is basically how I dress these days. Heavy coat, 2 layers of pants, and a ushanka. Yes, an ushanka. I don’t have any other hats, and it’s pretty warm.

Okay class at 9am tomorrow. See you all laters~

J263 – Coloring Experiment: Chips Don’t Lie

Click for enlarged version

[12/14/2009] Finals week~ I only have two this year, but they’re pretty brutal. The first one was kinda eh, and the one on Wednesday …

Let’s just say it’s thermodynamics, and leave it at that, k?

Anyway, here’s another coloring experiment. It’s a very painterly style (I was advised by one of my friends; her art style comes through a bit here), with a lot of color variation, etc.

I’m beginning to think that painterly stuff doesn’t suit me. My drawing style’s kind of simple anyway, so trying to use this sort of style is a bit … pretentious? I think I’ll try going all the way in the other direction (total cel-shading style) as another experiment …

This post was going to be accompanied by a parody of Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie”, but finals intervened. Sorry!
