dupdate 100621

[100621]

I started hosting non-comic files on my own back in like 2007 for a number of reasons. After shuffling hosts a couple times, the main NW site wouldn’t let me browse directories without ftp access, so I didn’t want to host there. Then I was super-pissed off when maj.com changed its hostname and screwed every link to every file I had hosted there.

So I started hosting on my own since then and it’s been working alright.

But that’s really besides the point here. When J and I went through and copypasta’d all of our posts onto the WordPress engine, I also tried to fix/remove a bunch of those dead maj.com links. If you go through the archives, you’ll find a ton of spots where I’ve written like “[100610: Dead link]“, where the maj.com link was broken and the file later deleted. Some of these images I rehosted on Colette after a while, and the links have been updated such that they work (or at least link to a relevant image, if not the original). That took a long time.

Other links that had to be fixed were any links that pointed to an internal “page”, like the “episode so-and-so’ links I like to post. The new post nomenclature keeps starts with “/episodeXX” up through about 40 (that’s about when we changed the site to not utilize a side-by-side format), and then goes “jXXX” and “dXXX” for all of J’s and my posts, respectively. J is actually ahead in posts all the way through like 2008, but now he’s a bazillion behind.

The new site makes it easier to post, but possibly a bit harder to navigate, simply because we don’t have a little navigation thing on the front page, but at least you can sort stuff on the archives page now. There’s also an internal search function so I don’t need to search “[term] site:nonsense-wars.com” on Google anymore. Cuz half of our search engine hits were from me doing that.

There are also categories and tags. J and I kind of sort differently, but for me it’s like the actual post (ie the comic page itself) is the “category” (ie “dcomic” or “dsketch”) and then if the post has a point, it’ll get a tag like “computing” or “art evolution”. Not too many posts have tags, but all posts have categories. This is really helpful for me at least, when I want to see when was the last time I talked about “computing” or “art evolution”, without a clunky Google search. Search by categories also lets you see all comics or all sketches, paints, etc. There’s a lot of overlap and underlap, so this isn’t THAT helpful for anything other than comics, though.

It’s also way easier to update (in theory). We still have to upload pictures and files, but we don’t need go and modify dropdownlist.pho or dupdates or jrants in J’s case. It’s just post and link for the most part. If only my scanner made things this easy.

Oh ya, there’s an “update” too.

These are the last of my “traditional” stuff from this quarter. This was pretty much the final project. It’s pretty simple, but as you know, less is more. It’s supposed to be a helicopter. The flavor text says something silly like “aerodynamically inefficient recreational ‘copter”… hence the AIRcopter. I didn’t think of that name, by the way. I just thought of the acronym for “AIR” cuz I needed the flavor text. Hell I didn’t even initially intend to do this thing, I originally wanted to do the DDA40XS, “steam turbine traction for the 21st century”, but someone apparently convinced me otherwise.

I guess the DDA40XS is kinda boring looking…

Anyway, here’s also a leftover from fall quarter. I found it whilst throwing out a ton of old paperwork.

That’s all for today.
