Panels 4 and 5 are based on the Lane Reading Room in Green Library.

The main structure of the Academy in panel 3 is probably a defunct government building. This is a generic BKS government building that was probably pre-fabricated or something. It shows up a couple times, but I don’t remember if I’ve posted any of the pics… It in turn is very loosely based off of an old elementary school BKS “map” with a building labeled “Keno’s Pinball Palace”… or something like that.

It was about 9 last night and I said to my brother something on the lines of “darn, I have to wake up early to go to work tomorrow”. And then he said something like “oh, but it’s Labor Day tomorrow”.

This is the first time in a long time that a vacation day has actually caught me off guard like that. I was genuinely like “holy shit another day of weekend”, and vowed to dedicated it to this painting that has been slowly making its way down the road to completion (maybe 20 percent right now). So far that hasn’t really happened. And now that J’s updated, this is just another distraction.

But anyway, I have a new phone. It’s not Dell Aero.

It’s a Motorola Droid X.

The Aero actually released back in late August (it was supposed to release on the 9th at first)… loaded with pretty much the earliest revision of Android and no date for an update. Until that point I also didn’t notice that it was missing what I consider some fairly crucial navigation buttons (largely because I assumed that every Android phone would have ‘em). Dell kind of dropped the ball and I really didn’t want to wait anymore.

At the Verizon store it was largely between the Incredible and the X. In retrospect, I don’t really see what I preferred about the Incredible… maybe the fact that it was closer to a uniform brick than the X (which has a bulge for the camera). The X has a larger screen, better battery life, more stock storage space, faster processor, an HDMI port (honestly, not that anyone cares… when are you going to output your phone to a TV?), and I prefer the more spartan Motorola UI. The X was on backorder, though, with an ETA of September 9th.

Oh ya, and they both had the crappy micro USB port.

Since I have the phone now, it obviously came early.

I can’t get my number transferred to it until the account owner (my dad) gets back from Paris, but I’ve been using it in place of the old SLVR, and it really does do everything that I need it to do. I already sold my PSP (at the same price at which I bought it several years ago in fact!) since the phone does music and video just fine (heck, I even don’t need to convert some avi videos!), and the Verizon signal isn’t quite as strong as the AT&T signal in general, but it should have wider coverage. I’ve also found that the phone can replace my USB drive… it’s even an upgrade from 4GB to 16GB!

The camera isn’t quite as nice as I’d hoped, especially having seen results from the iPhone 4′s camera on a couple occasions. Closeups are rather good, but as you get further away, things get fuzzier and grainier, possibly due to the weak flash. I haven’t really tried using a ton of lighting or taking outdoor shots yet, but I’ll get to it. So I haven’t quite sold my trusty point and shoot yet. The pics are sufficiently good enough for eBay listings, though, which is primarily for what I was using the T7 anyway.

The filenames aren’t quite as nice either, but I like the dating.

I was able to stream an MP4 over the network too. I can’t even figure out how to do that in Windows. There are apps for RDP as well. I haven’t quite gone a full workday with the phone yet (as I’ve been on my one vacation week this week) so I can’t quite comment on the battery life either, but the thing’s rated for like 8 hours of video playback, maybe twice that in music, and several hundred hours of standby. It’s interesting that the media playback time is actually approaching that of my laptop… clearly dumb phones are going to have an advantage in battery.

My friend who bought an X on launch day (also owns the Latitude E6400) was telling me about the specifications – the 1GHz processor, 512MB of memory, etc, and I said something on the lines of “I like how this beats my laptop of ten years ago”. It’s obviously not quite comparable, but it’s really fantastic how you can hold an old laptop in your palm like that. My Latitude CpT couldn’t play 480p video either. And don’t get my started on the battery life. Can’t wait to see what the next ten years holds, I suppose!

Obviously isn’t complete without an anime background. I’ll look into “Hare Hare Yukai” as my ringtone.

The strap is actually from my PSP.

That’s all for today.
