d344 120102 Akemi Homura 2011 R2, Love Hina sketches

[111220 – 120102]

The first illustration in today’s update was actually done before the last picture in the last update, but everything in the last update flowed together better, so I didn’t include this.

This is basically a remake of what I consider the crappiest painting as of late, the Akemi Homura 2011 painting. While this colored pencil piece is obviously somewhat less polished than its digital counterpart I think its also a lot closer to what I originally wanted. In part due to the immaturity of my colored pencil process, the lighting here is also fairly ambiguous.

There’s a less-than-interesting process photo I took a little more than halfway through too. A little bit of color testing on the side; for whatever reason it was significantly harder to settle on Akemi’s colors than it was to settle on Inori’s colors. You can also see that there’s actually a lot of “junk” lines that the colored pencil covered up really well. Overall, fairly satisfied, though. Satisfied enough that I wouldn’t attempt another in the near future.

These next sketches follow in the footsteps of J’s touhou sketches. I told J to give me some inspiration (as usual), and he said that I should choose a series and draw every character in that series. I thought that was a relatively good idea (my other idea was to try to draw Pokemon – maybe more on this in a future update), and I chose Love Hina, which is generally relatively underrepresented in my work, for my series.

First is Kitsune (the order here is pretty arbitrary, possibly related to how I was able to fit various characters on single pages); this one was, in general, a pretty crappy sketch, made worse by some post-sketch smearing and the fact that I was using a “funny” H pencil for the soft-shading. I’m trying to work on the hybrid-shading I mentioned in the last post; the process is still kind of shaky.

Su turned out pretty good. I think I’m getting a little better at doing some sort of heuristic for feet, but it still needs work. The problem with practicing legs and feet is that, while it’s very common to do sketches of an upper body, it’s not so much so to do sketches of lower bodies… so I don’t get enough practice.

Kanako is also decent I guess. I probably should have tried doing facial thumbnails for a lot of these before attempting the “formal” drawing, but obviously I did not.

Sarah is maybe a little more decent, but still meh. The next ones are going to be better, but I’m leaving those for the next update. Will probably try to do a “conventional” painting as well.

This past quarter has seen the biggest computing and setup shuffles in a long time. I had hardware floor installed, and I obviously had to have everything taken out of the room in order have it installed. Moving everything back resulted in the biggest re-organization I’ve done since I moved downstairs. I consolidated all of the Lego stuff, all of my books and manga, most of my drawing stuff, eBay stuff, tools, and so on and so forth; especially worthwhile was being able to consolidate more dead space. I also threw out a lot junk before the move out/move in.

In general, in addition to new grouping, I tried to categorize things into “commonly accessed”, “accessible”, and “not accessed”, and store appropriately. I previously had a lot of “not accessed” or “accessible” stuff in more easily accessed locations and vice-versa. With the gained/optimized space from everything, I took more stuff off of the floor and lowered my bed to a more practical height.

This is my setup at the start of this quarter, as it was after my last big move.

… and after the recent fleet overhaul and move out/move in. I like to think it’s a lot less cluttered, though it’s probably only a little bit so. I replaced my Model M with the Siig Minitouch due to the PS2/USB issues I mentioned in d342. In the culmination of my zeal to de-floor stuff (you can see all of my on-the-floor cabling is gone too; I put all of that on the silly ridge behind my desk – I also put the X220 dock there), I also decided to, for the second and final time, put Motoko out of service.

Server duty is now fulfilled by a somewhat ghetto SU9300/fanless “modded” E6400, which I took out of my usual eBay business cycle (it’s not my original one, which is currently used by my dad). It’s pretty crappy spec’ed (1GB, CCFL WXGA) and missing parts (battery, wifi, ODD), but it works, and it takes up way less space than my old Antec 900 (which is stored under the bed as “accessible”), uses way less power than the desktop kit, makes way less noise (none!), and I can use my standard E6400 image.

The only issue I’ve had so far is slow Ethernet speed, but I haven’t cared enough to look into it. I also probably need to find a better ExpressCard/USB3 adapter; the one I have now sucks balls. This last swap completes my long-planned non-desktop transition. Ironic as my brother now has a desktop (Q6700 and HD 6870) to play SC2 maxed. I still don’t play SC2 nearly enough for any of my SC2 concerns to really have materialized…
