d341 111101 Boats 2011 Comics

[1110xx]

Well, November’s update a little early as I’m gong to be busy next couple weeks.

We’ve certainly got a lot of mileage out of boats this year. This is probably the fifth or sixth relevant update. I don’t really remember what prompted me to draw this series (obviously the boats did, but I’m referring to the fact that I basically never draw 4koma about “The Adventures of D and J”, regardless of whatever stupidly funny things we do), but here it is in it’s full three-page glory.

J agrees that, for the most part, this accurately depicts all the silliness that went with the first boating outing (except for maybe the “pew” on the propeller thing). I think J also agrees that the drawings relatively accurately depict the physical state of me and him…

Now while I have nominally labelled Nonsense Wars an “artblog”, I think I usually end up writing about computing and computers enough such that I think it could constitute a ghetto tech blog. Today’s update is no different; I last noted what I called my “hardware master plan” back in June, and, as this always go, I arbitrarily decided to “finally” execute on it.

J293 – Strike Witches Top Hat

So, recently, the MIT Anime Club had an event, “Snooty Anime Discussion Hour”. I quote here the event description:

“It’s like the Internet without the flaming and trolling! Join fellow fans in discussing current and exciting issues in anime, fandom, and the industry in a forum-like setting. Or just sit in and learn more about our favorite medium! Tea and snacks provided.”

Of course, as it’s a snooty anime discussion hour, there must be hats. So I made this one with my friend TV&:

I didn’t actually wear this one (I had a large pirate hat), but it was for my friend wah, who runs this blog here.

J289 – Chicken Noodle

A horrible pun I’ve been wanting to make for a long time. The first two panels actually happened last Monday. I did this comic without any computer processing other than some minor brightness/contrast balancing.

Pho
Rageguy
The foodtruck where the first part of the exchange happened. It’s good cheap fare, for any of you who are in Cambridge.

More authentic red “PHOOOOO” version.

J285 – More Bus Sketches

And now, filler material of sorts in the form of MOAR sketches I made on the bus.

D, looking angry. Why? Because he was supposed to be posted last time. Oh well.

More sketches after the cut!

J284 – Manual Override

This one was inspired by a conversation with Sam, but for some reason it’s taken me several months to actually turn it into a comic. It’s been done with “greyscale bucketing” color technique, seen in this update. (By the way, “Bad Apple” in that update is a reference to this). Again, it’s done by first pencilling in red, inking, then taking out the red digitally. Erasing the red is a pain is really hard though, so I’m looking for alternatives to the red mechanical pencil lead I’ve been using. I’ve seen some “erasable colored pencils” in the supermarket, which might be a worthwhile investment just to see if they work.

The other alternative I’m considering is erasable pens. I used them in elementary school, and they were horrible then, but the modern ones seem to erase decently, so I want to try them out.

But yeah, not having to erase the whole drawing (as is the case with ordinary pencil lineart) is pretty awesome.
